About

The problem

Working with Power BI reports at scale is painful. Switching a datasource means editing DAX expressions, TMDL model definitions, JSON visual configurations, filters, and bookmarks — by hand. There is no built-in tooling for it. Documenting what is inside a report requires manually tracing every measure, column, and relationship. Most teams just don't bother.

Why local-first?

The core features — documentation, datasource switching, health monitoring, and DevOps diffing — process files entirely on your machine. This is not a marketing decision; it is an architectural one. Power BI projects contain sensitive business logic and data references. The optional API connectors (Power BI service, Fabric, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Databricks) connect directly to those services using your own credentials and are only active when you use them — no data is routed through Dummy BI servers.

What is coming

Dummy BI Automate is the first product — a desktop automation tool for documentation, datasource switching, health monitoring, and DevOps diffing. It is available now — free to download.

Dummy BI Engine is coming next — a DAX-to-DuckDB compiler that lets you run Power BI semantics on open infrastructure without VertiPaq.

A Power BI template marketplace is also planned, where creators can sell reusable dashboards and buyers can adapt them using Dummy BI Automate.

Built by

Dummy BI is built by a Power BI developer who spent years working with reports at scale and got tired of the manual work. If you have questions or feedback, reach out via the contact page. For legal details, see our Impressum.
